Military eyes Russian rifles, aerial drones

DEFENSE Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said Thursday the Armed Forces of the Philippines is planning to acquire Russian sniper rifles and unmanned aerial vehicles under the new defense cooperation policy announced by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The country has little need for new rifles because it recently bought around 50,000 new Remington M-4 carbines, leading the AFP to pull out older M-16 automatic rifles which may be distributed to reserve military and militia units if needed.

Lorenzana said they are still evaluating the Russian offer to sell the Philippines naval vessels, aircraft, helicopters and diesel electric submarines to determine whether the country is capable of using, maintaining and operating these equipment in the long term.
