Davao City to add two more flyovers

DAVAO CITY—Two more flyovers will be built to ease Davao’s traffic with Mayor Sara Duterte’s successful requests with the Department of Public Works and Highways.

This is on top of the P40 billion in road construction projects the DPWH has already programmed for Davao, City Planning and Development Office head Ivan Cortez said Thursday.

“Mayor Sara really requested for the flyovers to lessen the traffic congestions. Two out of four flyovers were approved, one in Matina Crossing and the other in the Toril area,” he said.

Cortez said the flyovers will be the answer to the traffic congestion in the southern part of the city.

He stressed that the flyovers will be coming from a different budget, not from the P40 billion as previously announced.

Cortez said the city is coordinating with the DPWH to start the P150-million Phase 1 of the 35-kilometer Coastal Road construction. This phase starts from the coastline of Toril to the coast of Matina.

In total, the P34-billion project will stretch from Toril to Roxas Ave., he added.

“The coastal road is very big and heavy [financially]. It was decided that we will divide it into three phases, and the first phase will start this year,” Cortez said.

When he was still Davao’s mayor last year, President Rodrigo Duterte also signed a joint venture agreement for the Mega Harbour reclamation project. The project will have an international port and four islands with residential, commercial, and tourism areas.

The City Planning Office also vowed to pursue the Davao railway system that takes travelers from Toril to the airport area. Cortez said they have received four proposals for the project, one of them a Davao-based contractor, but did not reveal any information on the bidders.
