Subsidy to state firms jump 48%

The government infused P82.376 billion into state-owned and controlled corporations in the first nine months of 2016, Bureau of Treasury data show.

Latest data released by the BTr showed subsidies extended by the government to GOCCs in the nine-month period jumped 48 percent to P82.376 billion from P55.819 billion year-on-year.

The bulk of the amount went to Philippine Health Insurance Corp. with P35.268 billion; National Irrigation Administration, P12.695 billion; National Housing Authority, P10.632 billion; National Food Authority, P4.250 billion; and Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management, P3.361 billion.

Subsidies in September climbed more than four times to P3.119 billion from P729 million a year ago.

The subsidies in the nine-month period already exceeded the state assistance of P78 billion for the full year of 2015.
