MALACAÑANG has extended its condolences to the Thai people on the death Thursday of their King Bhumibol Adulyadej. He was 88.

“On behalf of President Rodrigo Duterte and the Filipino people, we join the rest of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations [Asean] in mourning the passing [on] of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and all those he left behind,” he added.

Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch who died after 70 years as head of state, was widely revered but had been in poor health in recent years, making few public appearances.

He was seen as a stabilizing figure in a country hit by cycles of political turmoil and multiple coups.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, 64, will be the new monarch, the Thai government said.

“At the same time, we wish his son and heir apparent…all the best as he assumes the duties and responsibilities as Thailand’s new king,” the Palace said.

“We are certain that as the country’s titular leader and guiding light, he will be able to enhance Thailand’s stature in the region and help the country achieve lasting peace and continued economic and social progress in the years ahead,” he added.

The Philippine foreign office, in a statement, also said Adulyadej was “such a Father of the Nation, whom the Thai people revered and loved dearly. He will surely be missed. We are one with the Royal Family, the Thai Government, and the Thai nation during this period of deep mourning.”
