United Nationalist Alliance standard-bearer Vice President Jejomar C. Binay called for unity and reconciliation on Friday, a day before he goes back to Makati City for the miting de avance of his political party.

“On Monday, May 9, an important chapter in our history will be authored by our countrymen. The people will decide if we should continue the present dispensation in which neglect and error predominate. If we should surrender our future to the leadership of a dictator with bloody hands, and respects no one but himself. If we should accept someone who turned her back on our country for promised prosperity in another land,” he said.

The vice president expressed hope that voters would choose a leader who will be able to unite the people and guide the nation towards progress.

He vowed that his leadership would achieve this, strengthen the country’s democratic institutions, and help the nation recover from the damage inflicted by politics over the years.

“Let us start the change that would lead to unity, strengthen and dignify our democratic institutions, that would heal the old wounds of politics and give relief to our long-suffering countrymen. The exchange of accusations, not only between candidates but their supporters, has been extreme. Hopefully, after the elections, there would be reconciliation. Progress and not retrogression. Peace and not unrest. Unity and not divisiveness. Prosperity and not suffering. Respect and not violation of our rights. That is the prayer of Jojo Binay for the elections on May 9, 2016,” the vice president said.

Binay will be joined by other candidates of UNA in making their final call for support for the polls during the miting de avance on Saturday at four p.m. at Lawton Avenue corner JP Rizal St. and Kalayaan Avenue.

Having been the city’s mayor for 21 years before being elected vice president in 2010, Binay chose to hold UNA’s miting de avance in Makati where he was said to have successfully implemented pro-poor programs and improve the lives of his constituents.

Binay built his platform of governance upon the achievements of Makati under his leadership and has vowed to replicate what he has done for the city to the entire nation once he becomes president.

If elected, Binay vowed to push for the availability of basic services, benefits and pro-poor programs—just as he has done as mayor of Makati and as Vice President of the Philippines.
