As the transport, construction, and general manufacturing sectors progresses with the growth of the Philippine economy, innovations in lubricants technology are continuously developed and formulated by global energy, gas, and lubricants leader Shell to power the changing needs of partners in these industries.

This was highlighted in the Shell Technology Forum held at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City, as the event underscored the value of synergies to sustain growth among businesses, as well as the economic momentum of the country which was projected to reach 6.8 percent growth this year.

The day-long forum organized by energy and gas technology leader Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation and hosted by Shell Global Lubricants, gathered industry and government experts from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Congressional Committee of Transportation, and Shell technology experts, together with the company’s distributors and customers.

Dr. Felix Guerzoni, Product Application Specialist for Shell Lubricants Technology, talks about how lubrication technology affects various industries in terms of cost, productivity and efficiency.

The 6th annual gathering, aptly themed Synergy: Innovate. Learn. Collaborate. this year, drives Shell Lubricant’s commitment to continue its 100-year legacy in the country that involves  innovating to produce world-class lubricants, learning from customers and stakeholders through constant engagements, and shaping and strengthening partnerships towards achieving sustainable and attainable growth.

“We have invited speakers from government and our experts from the Shell Global Technology team to give us a view of upcoming developments in the economy, the market, and technology so we can prepare for the future. In Shell, we’ve always believed in the power of synergy and strive to work together with our customers to find solutions to your lubrication-related issues, especially those that affect your cost, productivity, and efficiency. That is why we hold events like this to reconnect with key industry players and continue to invest in developing innovative lubricants and services that meet the challenging demands of your operations,” noted JP Requejo, Shell cluster technical manager for South East Asia and Oceana, in his opening message.

The forum was composed of plenary sessions, where the government presented the country’s economic outlook, and Shell technology experts showcased the company’s technology leadership in lubricants.  Breakout sessions highlighting key areas on transport, construction, and general manufacturing followed, with discussions on lubricants solutions specific for each sector.

Delivering value for stakeholders through innovative lubricants technology is one of the ways the company reduces total cost of ownership which is the ability of engines to function for the long term with less maintenance and fuel costs.

Two of the company’s foremost lubricants technologies introduced at the forum was the newly reformulated Shell Rimula R4 L – a high performance diesel engine oil that provides robust protection for today’s engines, in line with the new American Petroleum Institute (API) CK-4 engine oil specification, and the new Shell Tellus S2 MX hydraulic oil, one of the first to meet the new Bosch Rexroth approval standards.

For the Shell Rimula R4 L, Shell Global Lubricants conducted more than 64 million kilometres of testing which is akin to driving over 1,500 times around the world, to be able to demonstrate the performance of the next-generation heavy-duty diesel engine oil (HDDEO) that meets the CK-4 specification without compromising oil life or wear protection.

The synthetic HDDEO line that includes the innovative Shell Rimula R6 LM are formulated using Dynamic Protection Plus, which combines Shell PurePlus Technology that reduce viscosity on the produced motor oil so less energy is needed to pump it around the engine resulting in increased fuel efficiency and reduced cost, and Adaptive Additive Technology that provides outstanding protection for modern heavy duty diesel engines. CK-4 oils replace CJ-4 oils and are completely backwards compatible with all engines manufactured prior to 2017. The new Shell Rimula CK-4 oils will be available in August.

Shell Tellus S2 MX hydraulic oil, meanwhile, demonstrates excellent wear protection for equipment operating in conditions that are thirteen times more severe than in standard industry tests. Developed for hydraulic applications in the manufacturing sector, Shell Tellus S2 MX is proven to deliver oil life three times longer than typical industry and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) limits. This new hydraulic oil helps equipment meet or exceed its design capabilities and helps enhance productivity by increasing the time between maintenance cycles. It demonstrates up to 80% better filterability, even under wet conditions, leading to less filter blockage and fewer unplanned shutdowns.

Shell Rimula R4 L and Shell Tellus S2 MX hydraulic oil help customers drive sustainable business value over time by contributing to reduced engine and equipment downtime, lower maintenance costs, and improved productivity.

By forging synergies and developing innovations through learning and collaboration, continuous growth across the transportation, construction, and manufacturing sectors is a vision that can be achieved, as enforced during the forum.

“Your continued partnership has been our driving force to develop better products and provide better service. Shell will provide the tools. You, our partners, possess the ingenious minds and business acumen, and with the help of government, together anything is possible,” emphasized Serge Bernal, Shell Lubricants marketing manager, in closing the event.

The Shell Technology Forum is one of the ways Shell Lubricants builds and strengthens partnerships that help promote energy efficient technologies and innovations, as the company continuously strives to provide cleaner energy through smarter products and smarter infrastructures, promote sustainable mobility and operations, and diversify the energy mix by developing cleaner-burning natural gas resources.
