President Rodrigo Duterte has just recently signed into law Republic Act No. 11608 which formally converts Quezon City’s Roosevelt Avenue into Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue, in honor of ‘Da King’.

Initially proposed through House Bill No. 7499, its original intention sought to rename Del Monte Avenue. However – after much criticism and opposition from the National Historic Commission, various church groups, and even local residents within the area – an amendment was made by Senate President Vicente Sotto before the bill’s second reading which prompted Roosevelt Avenue – which happens to be where FPJ’s ancestral home is located along – to be the thoroughfare up for renaming instead.

R.A. No. 11608 will take effect 15 days after its publication in the Official Gazette and with it, corresponding orders and circulars are to be put into place by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) within 60 days from its implementation.

FPJ, whose birth name is Ronald Allan Kelley Poe, passed away last December of 2004. After slipping into comatose from a stroke which caused multiple organ failure and thrombosis, FPJ lost his life at 65 years old.

Poe was an action star for 48 years (1955-2003); his long and very successful career earned him the nickname ‘Da King’. In addition, he also wrote, directed, and produced several of the films he starred in – under the pseudonyms Ronwaldo Reyes and D’Lanor. A few months before his passing, FPJ ran for presidency in the 2004 Presidential Elections wherein he narrowly lost to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in controversial passion.
