Environment, tech leaders assemble for a better planet in Huawei’s global webinar

The challenges in today’s world can be mitigated as tech and environmental leaders from around the world came together in Huawei’s global webinar titled “Tech for a better planet,” as they provided ways technologies can be utilized to support environmental protection.

Eight leaders in tech and environment shared their expertise and agreed that utilizing the latest technologies such as big data monitoring, IoT, 5G, and AI are pivotal in saving the environment. 

“Technology can be a way to scale up nature conservation efforts,” Director IUCN Green List Certification, James Hardcastle said. 

Tao Jing Wen, Huawei Director of Corporate Sustainability, said "Tech for a better planet is our promise and commitment. Environmental Protection is one of our sustainable strategies."

Dr. Bisel Jamoussi, Chief of the Study Group of ITU said that ITU is helping the ICT Sector move towards a carbon neutral path through standards like ITU-T SG5, research, raising awareness and promoting collaboration in the industry.

Founder and CEO of Rainforest Connection, Topher White compared the world’s tech like a blue ocean where the opportunities of saving the environment open the way to limitless potential. 

“What we’re seeing now is to get more data in the field. We see the next world as blockchain and AI. If you look at nature, it’s almost like a blue ocean. There’ s a whole new frontier on that,” White said.

Acting Director General of IUCN Dr. Grethel Aguilar summarized the event with her  conclusion statement: “I see this technology as a source of transformational change. I think technology is a future in a big way, and we should embrace it. This planet is in your hands. Thank you very much.” 

The webinar’s speakers included Huawei Director of the Board and Director of the Corporate Sustainability Development Committee, Tao Jingwen, Global Head of Corporate Engagement and Reporter Services, CDP, Daniel Turner, Chief of the Study Groups Department, Dr. Bilel Jamoussi, Michael Fraisse, Huawei Europe CTO of Digital Power Product Line, Dr. Nirmal Jivan Shah, CEO, Nature Seychelles and IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, Roman Eyholzer CEO, Porini Foundation, Prof. Feng Limin, Vice Director of National Forestry and Grassland Administration Amur Tiger and Amur Leopard Monitoring and Research Center, China.
