Benefitting from online, classroom learning

EDUCATIONAL institutions have learned to ride the wave of the fast-paced digital age by developing online learning programs to complement classroom style learning. Students benefit from this method of learning because it allows them to learn in their own space and pace.

While students are armed with flexibility and a practical option, it can still be a challenge when it comes to time management and ensuring all tools available are maximized. It all starts with having the right attitude to effectively and efficiently learn from an online type of set-up.

AMA Education System has been offering Blended Learning courses since 2004 and recently, full online degrees and short courses. Based on their experiences, AMAES’ academic heads give tips on how to best maximize an online set-up.

Go through all available resources. One of the advantages of online learning is the accessibility of resources offered in each online module. “Apart from the lessons and discussions, students should take advantage and click through the various resources that can be found in the system’s online library,” said Dr. Emelin M. Magada, Chief Academic Officer of AMAES, adding that online modules are particularly designed by education experts so that students can learn topics on their own through pop quizzes, summaries, and keyword reviews.

Do extra research. There’s always room for improvement so take the initiative and try going beyond the virtual classroom by checking out other valuable and valid resources that are readily available in the internet. “As long as the source is verified, you can gain more knowledge from different mediums and tools that can be found online such as online books and instructional videos,” said Dr. Magada.

Treat online study as an appointment. Time management is a common problem among those who spend time studying online. It’s important that even if it is convenient, you’re able to allocate set times to cover everything you need to in time for classroom sessions. “You really have to manage your time to ensure you don’t miss valuable study time. If you don’t, it’s your learning that will be delayed,” warns Dr. Magada.

Use classroom time well. After learning as much as you can from online resources, there will be times to validate and apply it in the classroom. The idea is to have a collaborative dialogue with other students and mentors to test whatever you’ve learned online. “This is where students can put what they’ve learned into action. Make the discussion more meaningful by raising questions, seeking clarification, and sharing ideas that were picked up from the extra research,” said Dr. Lilibeth F. Taa, Deputy Head of Academic Affairs Department, AMAES.

Find what works for you. Try out different study methods to discover what suits you best. “You will discover that online learning is enjoyable because you can personalize the way you study. Once you reach the classroom, you’ll be equipped to discuss topics at length. At AMAES, we pride ourselves for providing these kinds of options for our students,” says Dr. Amable R. Aguiluz V, considered the father of IT education in the Philippines and the Founder and Chairman of AMAES.
