Infinix Zero 5: A pleasant surprise

QUICK, take a look at the photos. Nice ain’t it? Now, what camera do you think those were taken from?

Samsung? Huawei? Iphone? Oppo? Vivo?

All wrong.

Those were taken using the Infinix Zero 5, a relatively new smartphone brand in the Philippines, but is slowly making strides with its power-packed features and relatively competitive price.

Taking photos with vivid colors and sharp tones and lines, the Infinix Zero 5 doesn’t disappoint and is a pleasant surprise to customers looking for something different.

Don’t expect your selfies though to obliterate all the lines, wrinkles and imperfections of your face, making you look like a wax figure straight out of a Maddam Tussauds’ Museum. Selfies using the Zero 5 are just right, nothing dramatic, which is nice.

But its photos aren’t even the Infinix Zero 5’s strongest suit. Its battery is.

Taking photos with vivid colors and sharp tones and lines, the Infinix Zero 5 doesn’t disappoint and is a pleasant surprise to customers looking for something different.

Boasting of a 4,350 mAh battery, the Infinix Zero 5 lasted nearly two days of light surfing, a couple of calls and text messages and a sprinkling of camera use.

The Zero 5 was launched in the Philippines last November by Infinix Mobility. Sporting a 5.98-inch display, MediaTek Helio P25 chipset, 6GB RAM, dual-rear cameras, the Infinix Zero 5 is a little bigger than your usual smartphone, making it quite difficult to do one-hand navigation.

But while the size may be a turn off to some, especially those with little hands, it is however a welcome feature to those who want their screens bigger, all 166.38 mm tall and 82.38 mm wide of it. Watching youtube videos or NBA games is nice experience, what with its almost 6-inch display and IPS panel and Full HD resolution, with a pixel density of 368ppi, which is still acceptable for its size. Sound quality is also topnotch.

A screen protector is pre-installed on top of the Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Displayed above are the earpiece, sensor, the 16MP selfie camera, LED flash, and notifications light.

On the left is the dedicated microSD card slot and tray, while situated on the right is the volume control, power/lock button, and dual microSIM card slots. At the bottom is the loudspeaker (trust us, it’s loud), USB-C port, main microphone, and 3.5mm audio port.

At the back are the dual rear cameras consisting of a 12MP primary and a 13MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom, the LED flash, and the fingerprint scanner.

Despite the large size, the Zero 5 looks and feels premium. It is also nice to hold thanks to the metal body, with tapered sides, chamfered edges, and 2.5D curved glass. The matte finish repels fingerprints and smudges.

Powering the Zero 5 is a MediaTek Helio P25 octa-core chipset, Mali-T880 MP2 GPU, 6GB RAM, and XOS 3.0 Hummingbird based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Its score of 66,297 at AnTuTu’s benchmark ain’t bad  at all for a mid-range smartphone.

The Infinix Zero 5, of course, isn’t a perfect phone. No phone is, by the way. The phone book could use a little more extra space for long names. And it is quite heavy at 197g due to the big battery, although the phone feels solid and nice to hold with its metal body, tapered sides and 2.5D curved glass.

But that’s just about it. The Infinix Zero 5 is a solid, mid-ranged smartphone for customers looking for something different.

And these days, different is a good thing.

(The Infinix Zero 5 is priced at P13,999 and is now available for purchase at Lazada and it comes with noise cancelling earphone.”
