REVOLUTIONIZING smartphones for over a decade and even with the iconic Home button getting ditched from the physical display, Apple has surely brought its A-game to the world with the creation of its new flagship smartphone called the iPhone X.

Released last Nov. 3, Apple just marked a new era of iPhones as the iPhone X allows its users to fully immerse themselves on the phone, experiencing the device as the real display.

Now tagged as the future of smartphones, the new iPhone X was quickly the talk of the town as Apple packed the said smartphone with incredible new features and advanced technologies.

iPhone X has developed the form and display together to define a whole new integration. A stunning all-screen, all-glass display is apparent from front to back and its corners, polished in a stainless steel band to reinforce the water-resistant design. For the first time, the all-glass formulation, the most durable glass used in a smartphone, enables its users to charge their phones wirelessly.

The 5.8-inch Super Retina display, the first OLED panel, provides users with a million-to-one contrast ratio, beautiful colors, true blacks and a wide array of color support.

The High-Definition Range (HDR) feature allows users to capture amazing photo and video contents. Also, for more dynamic and real experience, the True Tone feature automatically adjusts the white balance of the interface in order to match the natural light surrounding the user.

The new TrueDepth camera system, located within the tiny space above the phone, enables new features. By mapping 50 facial muscle movements in real time, the TrueDepth camera brings emojis to life called as the Animoji. It features the 7MP TrueDepth camera and a redesigned 12MP rear camera with dual OIS for capturing more detailed photos and videos.

It also uses depth-sensing technology that allows users to unlock their phones at a glance called the Face ID. With over 30,000 dots invisible to the naked eye, the Face ID maps the geographical points of the user’s face.

More so, the neural engine on the A11 bionic chip, the one responsible for delivering great performance amidst multi-purpose use, recognizes the user even in the dark and adapts to your physical changes, making your face as your secure password and allowing you to not only unlock one’s phone but also to authenticate it and use Apple Pay.

Indeed, with all these features, people at Apple surely have put a lot of effort into creating what they think a great and true smartphone should be. The design, features, performance, and even the camera are all impressive enough to create hysteria amongst Apple users.

However, amidst the worldwide fervor, one must decide whether to risk money for a big-time smartphone or look past it because of its cost, finding another smartphone in the process.

Google Pixel 2 XL

When you question everything that a phone can do, you find a new way forward.

Just a month after Apple showed off the iPhone X last September, tech giant Google released its own handheld devices called the Google Pixel 2. These flagship handsets of Google carry Android 8.0 Oreo as its operating system.

Like Apple, Google has opted for an all-screen front design. The Pixel 2 XL has an almost all screen front with only small bezels at both top and its end, adding speakers within.

The said smartphone features a combination of metal and glass, attaching a metal frame and encasing a glass panel at the top of the rear.

Though both the iPhone X and Pixel 2 XL are waterproof, only the iPhone X is compatible with wireless charging. However, Google assured users of its fast-charging capability that easily puts the battery life for seven hours for only 15-minute charging.

The Google Pixel 2 XL comes with a 12.2-megapixel single rear camera and an eight (8)-megapixel front-facing camera. There is also a portrait mode, the auto-HDR, and an unlimited storage for photos, but sometimes the Pixel 2 XL falters on measuring white balance. Still, it is one of the smartphones with capable cameras.

Supported by 4GB of RAM, the Pixel 2 XL is available in 64GB and 128GB storage options; neither of which offers microSD support for storage expansion.

The Google Pixel 2 XL runs on Android Oreo with all the latest features and functions Google has. The Google Assistant can be easily accessible by squeezing its frame, compatible with a wide array of services. Although it has been bombarded by criticism due to its dullness in colors, the Pixel 2 XL has more RAM, a sharper display, a higher resolution front camera, and more open software.

However, the Google Pixel 2 XL is a little cheaper as its price starts at roughly P42,993, or US $849 (£799, AU$1,399), while the iPhone X costs P50,589, or US $999 (£999 / AU$1,579).

Samsung Galaxy S8

As Samsung believes that we live our lives through our phones, they created a bezel-less and full-frontal edge-to-edge screen smartphone to allow users get the incredible full-screen experience.

Released last April 2017 and since then known as one of the most beautiful phones ever made by Samsung, the Samsung Galaxy S8 presents a new experience by immersing oneself in a bigger view.

As for its design, the Galaxy S8 is made with a metal core and glass to its front and rear sides. The glass in front and back is protected from scratches, water, and dust.

Unlike in iPhone X, Samsung’s Galaxy S8 still has a virtual home button that lies under the display screen, situated where it normally is – invisible when not in use, then becomes accessible when you need it.

Also, both iPhone X and Galaxy S8 use the OLED feature for more striking colors, increased contrast, and blacker blacks. However, Samsung’s own display can go brighter, beating reflections and more impactful HDR contents.

Meanwhile, Apple has the advantage when it comes to HDR as the iPhone X has included the Dolby Vision and True Tone technology to its features, allowing contents to look more pleasing to the eyes.

As for the camera, though it does not have a dual camera in its rear, the Galaxy S8 has a 12-megapixel rear camera and an eight (8)-megapixel front camera, delivering crisp and vivid photos even at night.

It also uses the Exynos or even the Qualcomm 835 platform. The said smartphone also has greater storage, allowing the use of microSD for expansion. In the case of Apple, if one needs a lot more space, it also requires additional money.

As for its charging capability, the Galaxy S8 lasts for a day, offers fast charging through cables, and accepts wireless charging. It is even more secure with a fingerprint scanner, a facial recognition, and an iris-scanning feature.

Lastly, as for the price, the Galaxy S8 is obviously much cheaper as it has been on the market for seven months now. The price starts at P31,890.
