True to its vision to be a world-class energy solutions provider, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) was awarded anew by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) with a Certificate of Compliance to Republic Act No. 7920 or the “New Electrical Engineering Law”, the only Philippine distribution utility to achieve the milestone.

With the recognition, Meralco’s 7.6 million customers can be assured that the power distributor’s facilities and buildings are fully maintained by an adequate number of highly qualified professional and registered electrical engineers, and registered master electricians for safe operations.

During the awarding ceremony, Hon. Francis V. Mapile, PRC Chairman for Professional Regulatory Board of Electrical Engineering, hailed Meralco for its full cooperation in the implementation of the law.

“Meralco’s commitment to safety as an integral part of its operations is highlighted with its full compliance to the Electrical Engineering Law. We hope that this serves as an inspiration to other distribution utilities to follow suit,” he said.

The law aims to comprehensively regulate the practice, licensing, and registration of licensed electrical practitioners in the country.

Meralco in 2019 became the first distribution utility in the country to conform with the law and remains as the sole fully compliant energy distributor. Meralco has committed to support the PRC’s compliance advocacy and help promote and influence compliance of its other stakeholders, namely their subsidiaries, service contractors, suppliers and customers, in collaboration with the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (IIEE).

Meralco’s full compliance also earned the energy distributor a Plaque of Appreciation from Engr. Lyndon R. Bague, the National President of the IIEE—the only accredited professional organization of electrical practitioners by the PRC.

Engr. Antonio M. Abuel Jr., Vice President and Head of Meralco Facilities, Safety, and Security Management, said the recognition empowers the distribution utility to continue delivering on its promise of reliable and efficient electric service.

“Meralco’s vision is to be a world-class company and a service provider of choice. To deliver this promise of safe, reliable, adequate, and efficient electric service, we rely on our 5,800 strong, competent, qualified, and committed workforce wherein 30% are licensed electrical practitioners,” he said.

As a major player in the Philippine energy industry, Meralco is embracing sustainability and safety at the core of its operations with focus on four strategic pillars: Power, Planet, People, and Prosperity to continuously deliver on its promise of stable, reliable, and sufficient power supply to its customers.
