PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) recently joined the Roundtable Discussion (RTD) on Sustainable Food and Agriculture Systems organized by SEARCA and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

The only Philippine telco company present during the RTD, PLDT and Smart showcased their #FarmSmart advocacy which highlights the Group’s long-term commitment towards helping uplift the lives and livelihood of local farmers, through technology-driven solutions and opportunities for agricultural communities.

Dr. Nur Azura Binti Adam, SEARCA Deputy Director for Programs

PLDT and Smart are also continuously finding tech-enabled solutions to bridge the digital divide through initiatives like the Digital Farmers Program and ‘Buy Local’ across farming communities to ensure no one gets left behind.

“One of the major challenges farming communities face, especially those in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, includes limited to no access to electricity and connectivity. We at PLDT and Smart are working tirelessly to expand our network’s coverage and capacity to reach underserved areas, while taking on a whole-of-nation approach and working with national and local governments to engage communities in need,” shared Stephanie V. Orlino, Stakeholder Management Head at PLDT and Smart, during the RTD.

Aside from strengthening digital literacy among farmers, PLDT and Smart are also committed to ensuring the online safety and security of vulnerable communities, including farmers, through various digital wellness initiatives.

“We also acknowledge the vulnerability of farmers due to lack of digital knowledge and skills. Apart from heavily investing in infrastructure to ensure our network is safe and secure for our customers, PLDT and Smart also assist farmers with internet safety and teach them practical tips on how they can protect themselves online,” Stephanie V. Orlino added.

The PLDT Group remains fully committed to working with local and international partners in the public and private sectors to achieve a food-secure Philippines with prosperous farmers and fisherfolk.

PLDT and Smart will also continue to prioritize extending equal livelihood opportunities to the local food and agricultural sectors towards a better and smarter life through technology. This is aligned with the UNSDGs #1 No Poverty, #2 Zero Hunger, and #8 Decent Work and Economic Growth
