How Jace Roque translates his pain into music

Filipino EDM artist Jace Roque is back with another track from his Inferno album, “Trust.” Like his previous songs, “Di Para Sa’yo” and “Be Someone,” it tackles the challenging event in Jace’s life when he confronted his former partner about cheating.

Listening closely to the lyrics, Jace took their heart-wrenching conversation into a song with 80s synth vibes and his signature EDM element. He took the pain from his experiences and poured it all into the track.

“During that time, kasi, it was my only way to cope. Kasi first time ko ma-experience to be cheated on, na may third party. Natutulog akong umiiyak so nagising ako at around 5:00 a.m. then bigla na lang nag-pour ‘yung lyrics,” Jace said.

He added that at the time, he still hadn’t digested what happened, which allowed him to finish the composition in just a few minutes. Although it sounds cathartic for Jace to release his pent-up emotions, it has only provided him with temporary relief.

“Very painful [and], in a way, therapeutic. Overall, it’s something I don’t want to look back to. 2020 ko natapos yung track, and it took me two years before ako maging ready na pag-usapan siya,” the EDM artist said.

Although Jace is on his way to healing from the trauma, he still isn’t entirely out of the woods. In the months before the track’s release, he admitted to experiencing residual pain despite moving on. He remains grateful, however, that he can discuss his feelings and situation without breaking down or feeling devastated.

Jace isn’t the only one to experience unfaithfulness from a partner. He advises people to look out for the red flags in their relationships and don’t ignore them.

Ako kasi nagpakatanga talaga ako. Binigyan ko ng madaming chances until napagod na lang ako. Don’t ignore the red flags kasi nadiyan ‘yan. Once you recognize it, talagang mags-snap out ka of whatever thinking you have,” he said.

The EDM artist is keeping his walls up in the meantime as he slowly learns how to trust others again. After all, Jace puts trust at the foundation of his relationships, from romantic to filial to friendly to professional.

When it comes to trusting someone professionally, Jace sees working with Ditto Music Philippines as one of the best decisions he has made for the year. The label offered Jace a record deal in 2020, but an existing contract with AWAL, an international record label now owned by Sony Music Entertainment, hindered him from accepting.

In March of this year, Jace revisited the offer and happily signed with the label, giving him artistic freedom and a platform to connect with his Filipino fans.

“Trust” is only the third track from Inferno. He teases that the last track for the album, titled “Back to Beginning,” is still rooted in pain but serves as the ender before Jace takes listeners on another journey with his next album, Paradiso
