Former Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Erickson Balmes had a friendly discussion with Jerry Acuzar, the Chairperson of the Manuel Luis Quezon University, about the elections and the seemingly low voter’s turn-out every election day. Their shared vision that voter’s education may be the viable way to encourage more Filipino to vote met action when GVM was born on February 2019.

Founded by Balmes, Go Vote Movement (GVM) believes that every Filipino, regardless of affiliation or political orientation should freely exercise their right to vote. He said that GVM advocates for a more participatory election and a fuller exercise of the cherished right of suffrage. In order to encourage more registered Filipino voters to vote on May 13, GVM conducted its first Free Voter’s Education Seminar to the members of Manuel Luis Quezon University (MLQU) community last March 14, 2019.

The objective of the seminar is to train the participants on their rights and duties as voters and/or poll watchers because GVM believes that an educated voting population can transform a corrupted government system by electing deserving leaders with the passion to create positive change in the society.

Balmes also made it clear that the purpose of the organization is to just encourage more registered Filipino voters to vote and not to dictate people who they should vote.

“To set the record straight, we at GVM are not endorsing any candidate nor any political belief. Ours is an advocacy, plain and simple. We do not carry any color except for the colors of our flag,” Balmes said.

Regarding their goal for the 2019 Elections, GVM stated that, if by their humble efforts, the voter’s turn-out for the 2019 mid-term elections will be larger than that of the 2013 mid-term elections, then they have done their job for the society.
