Ayala Land readies its properties for Earth Hour

Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) is preparing all of its properties nationwide for this year’s Earth Hour by consistently going beyond the switching-off of lights, and integrating energy efficiency, water efficiency, and solid waste management into its day-to-day operations.  While Earth Hour is held only once annually, the company has embedded sustainability into the year-round planning, design, and management of its properties nationwide.

Through its subsidiary Ayala Property Management Corporation (APMC) for instance, ALI has effectively lowered its energy intensity (kwh per square meter of space) by 38 percent from 2011 to 2015.  This was achieved through retrofits, redevelopment, and other interventions which include the replacement of old light bulbs with LED bulbs, and investments in new air conditioning technologies.

These avoidance and efficiency measures reduce unnecessary load on the national grid, and also lead to cost savings which may then be reinvested into the overall sustainability effort.   Last December, 10 APMC-managed properties, including BPI-Philam Life Makati, Convergys One, and Bonifacio High Street, were recognized by the Department of Energy through the Don Emilio Abello Energy Efficiency Awards. The year prior to that, APMC-managed malls and offices saved Php 131.5 million by avoiding 16,409 MWh of electricity consumption.

“While eco-efficiency is an everyday endeavor at Ayala Land properties, we fully support activities such as Earth Hour that help us engage with all our stakeholders and encourage them to join us in our commitment to sustainability,” said APMC President Laurent Lamasuta.

APMC also recently partnered with ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc. to recycle and sell APMC's used oil and used lead acid batteries.  Revenues from the partnership will help fund environmental initiatives such as the reforestation of the La Mesa Watershed, and the rehabilitation of the La Mesa Ecopark.

ALI is the Philippines’ leading developer of sustainable estates, offering a diverse mix of properties such as residential, retail, office, hotels, and leisure developments, that support local economic growth and nation-building.  As part of its sustainability efforts, it recently announced that it is embarking on an aggressive plan to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its commercial properties and to aim for carbon neutrality by 2022.  The company will achieve this through a combination of initiatives, including passive cooling design, energy efficiency, renewable energy sourcing, and carbon offset mechanisms such as forest regeneration and protection.

Earth Hour 2017 will be on 25 March, Saturday, at 8:30 PM Local Time. The event originated from Sydney, Australia in 2007 as an attempt to conserve energy and electricity and combat global warming.  Participants are asked to simultaneously shut-off lights and unnecessary electrical items for one hour.  Today, more than 100 countries take part in the celebration and contribute to the prevention of climate change.
