ONE Championship stars stand up to racism

ONE Championship World Champions came together to denounce racism, which has been rampant amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the virus originating from Wuhan, China, cases of racism have been on the rise, and it is people of Asian descent that are often targets of these attacks.

ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera, ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee, ONE Lightweight World Champion Christian “The Warrior” Lee, and ONE Featherweight World Champion Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen joined forces in a video to remind everyone that such actions have no place in the world.

“There has been a huge increase in the number of violent racist acts towards Asians. We need to do something” Angela Lee said.

“Now more than ever we have to come together.”

The stars then enumerated some steps on how to avoid these incidents altogether.

For Vera, an American born Filipino, it pays to speak up.

“If you see someone getting beat on, or be a target of racism (speak up),” Vera said.

“We have to stand together.”

The Vietnamese-Australian Nguyen on the other hand reminds everyone that a simple joke could be the start of something bigger.

“Don’t make jokes linking Asians to Covid-19,” Nguyen said. “This virus does not discriminate, and neither should we.”

The health crisis is already a major problem in itself and adding the issue of racism to the mix is of no help. For The Home Of Martial Arts, the battle lines are already drawn – both in helping curb the virus, and for standing up against prejudice.
