Team Lakay bares grand goals for 2020

Things may have slowed down a bit as a veil of uncertainty looms over the world amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but the goal never changes for Team Lakay.

Once ONE Championship gets rolling, the team will be on a quest to regain the three World Titles they lost over the last 15 months.

Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio, Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, and Joshua “The Passion” Pacio once held World Titles in their respective divisions at the end of 2018.

They lost all of those in the first three months of 2019, though Pacio was able to recover the ONE Strawweight World Title in April.

Their coach, Mark Sangiao, has not forgotten about the other three.

“The plan moving forward is to keep on winning, work on their weakness, become more rounded, so there’s no weakness in them, whether that be on the ground or with wrestling,” he said.

“We want them to be complete because we want all the belts back that we lost.”

Asked about who he sees as the closest guy to the belt, it is Danny “The King” Kingad.

Kingad made it to the finals of the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Championship last year, and though he lost to Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson he showed a lot of promise for a 24-year-old.

With a victory over Xie “The Hunter” Wei to open 2020, it will not be surprising to see Kingad in contention for the ONE Flyweight World Title currently held by Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes.

“We want Danny to win it. As much as possible I am also hoping for Kevin’s resurgence and maybe Eduard can get his belt back as well,” Sangiao said.

“We have to make sure that we keep on learning, that we’re not stagnant, that each day we learn new things.  It’s also about making sure that they are prepared, both physically and mentally.

“If we identify what these athletes need, then we’re in good shape. After all, they’re the ones competing in there.”
