Seventeen-year-old Vanessa Sarno earned two gold medals as she took the women’s 71-kg crown in the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships, Wednesday evening (Manila time) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Lifting 128 kgs and carrying a total of the 229 kgs, Sarno claimed the title over Turkmenistan’s Gulnabat Kadyrova, who however took the gold in the snatch at 102 kgs., with the Filipina settling for silver at 101.
Kazakhstan’s Yekaterina Bykova bagged third place and the bronze with 91 kgs in the snatch.
The meet record in the men’s 81 kgs fell twice in a row, first when China’s Lyu Xiaojun, the gold medallist, lifted 174 kgs for new world and Asian marks in the snatch as he finished with 374.
The second time the record tumbled was when his Chinese teammate Li Dayin broke his records with 175 kgs in the day’s last attempt.
After Li missed his attempts in the clean and jerk, Toshtemirov Mukhammadkodir of host Uzbekistan, settled for second at 353kg (160+193).
Rejepov Rejepbay of Turkmenistan grabbed third with his total of 341 kgs (156+185).
Meanwhile, the Samahang Weighlifting ng Pilipinas clarified that Filipino bets Elreen Ando and Kristel Macrohon won’t be able to make qualification for the Tokyo Olympics.
SWP president Monico Puentevella said the two lacked the required number of Olympic Qualifying Tournaments to earn slots to Tokyo.
Both Ando and Macrohon were only able to compete in three events during the qualification phase, needing five to be eligible.
