Pinoy chess prodigy Oshrie Jhames “OJ” Constantino Reyes, who is nine-years-old, bested a strong field of contenders to rule the Frontier Wheel Chess Under 12 Arena online international chess tournament via lichess.org last Saturday, September 26, 2020.
Reyes, a grade four pupil of EZEE School in Guagua, Pampanga, was actually tied with 11-year-old Ryien Bahita, a grade six pupil of Barangay Aquino Elementary School in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental who also finished with 60 points. Reyes, a native of Dila-Dila, Santa Rita, Pampanga, clinched the coveted title by virtue of higher tie break points.
Reyes received the top prize 30 Singapore dollars (around P1,000) from tournament organizer and Singapore chess teacher Arena Grandmaster Robert Suelo, Jr.
Jubail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia based Jimmy Reyes, father/coach of OJ congratulated his son for his latest achievement in chess.
Bahita, meantime pocketed $20 (Singapore) (around P700) for his effort.
In third place is Alex Tan of Singapore who had 28 points to go home with $10 (Singapore) (around P350).
Meanwhile, tournament organizer and Singapore chess teacher Arena Grandmaster Robert Suelo Jr. announced the staging of F1 Chess Challenge Lichess Online Invitational Tournament on October 3, 2020, Saturday.
After the successful staging of the Babin Smith Anniversary Cup International Online Chess Tournament last Monday, September 21, 2020, tournament director National Master Homer Cunanan will organize another online chess tournament dubbed as Haring Bastos Cup.
The 15-round Swiss System tournament, 3-minute blitz time control format, backed up by AGM Angelito “Anji” Camer and Johnny Teves, gets underway on October 4, 2020, Sunday at lichess.org.
This one-day chess affair is open to all chess players. Registration is free. Among the early entries are 13-time Philippine Open champion GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., IM Chito Garma, FM Jony Habla, NM Jeth Romy Morado, AGM Glenn Lemen, Ted Ian Montoyo, Alexis Emil Maribao, Yves Christian Fiel, Michael Metrio at Jhulo Goloran.
