A new director has been named to the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) of University of Santo Tomas.

Fr. Rodel Cansancio will now take the place of Ermito de Sagon, and he will be the third sports official which has taken over the university’s sports program over the past month.

The university named Casancio as the new head of the IPEA through its official publication, Varsitarian.

Many changes in the IPEA have taken place since resignation of Fr. Jannel Abogado, who quit following controversies which took place after the UST Growling Tigers held a training bubble in Sorsogon.

The Sorsogon camp, and the investigation done by government agencies, eventually paved the way for the resignation of Aldin Ayo as coach and his indefinite ban from the UAAP.

Two assistant coaches, and eight players eventually left the squad.

Cansancio previously worked as UST’s acting assistant to the Vice Rector for Finance. He is expected to come aboard as a member of the Board of Managing Directors (BMD) in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.

For now, a total of 12 candidates are aspiring to be the next coach of the Growling Tigers.

Among the applicants are Aris Dimaunahan, former Alaska import Sean Chambers, Rain or Shine assistant Chris Gavina, and alumni Siot Tanquingcen.

The Varsitarian, the school’s official publication, reported on Wednesday that Cansancio has been named new IPEA director. He will be in charge of finding the next steward for the rebuilding Growling Tigers.

Cansancio replaces Fr. Ermito de Sagon, who took over the job on an interim basis following the resignation of Fr. Jannel Abogado in the wake of the fallout from the controversial Bicol bubble.

The Bicol bubble set for the UST Tigers during community quarantine led to the resignation of Aldin Ayo as coach and his indefinite ban from the UAAP.
