Malditas shoot for seat in Asian tilt

The Philippine women’s football team shoots for a second straight win and a sweep of its Group F qualifying round assignments that will put the Malditas in the tournament proper of the 2022 Asian Football Confederation Women’s Asian Cup.

The opportunity to make outright qualification can happen if the Malditas can hurdle Hong Kong at 6 p.m. today at the JAR Stadium in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

“If you believe, you dream, you do it,” said Malditas’ skipper Inna Palacios in a PinoyFutbol Facebook Live session before they went into practice yesterday afternoon.

The Marlo Maro-coached Malditas’ bid improved after Nepal’s own efforts to reach the main draw in over 20 years ended in disappointment last Tuesday.

Nepal played a goalless qualifying draw against Hong Kong, putting an end to its campaign.

Because of this, the  match between Hong Kong and Philippines will determine the group winner instead, and which team will reach next year’s finals in India.

“We really need to get the full six points home, so we can go to the next game. To win this match, we need to execute plays well and score the goal. We’re gonna make the best out of this, and go all the way,” said one of the team’s veterans in Camille Rodriguez.

On the other hand, a victory against the Malditas will end Hong Kong’s 19-year absence in  one of Asia’s premier women’s football’s competitions.

Hong Kong will be a challenging encounter, since the team has been a regular fixture in the early editions of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

Hong Kong has appeared in 14 consecutive tournaments from 1975 to 2003, but it has been absent in the finals since the qualifiers were introduced ahead of the 2006 edition.
