The cancellation of the 31st Summer Universiade this year was due to a surge in a new variant of COVID-19 cases around the world.

“Selection of university tennis student-athletes will have to be redefined as the age category annually changes,” said Quiza of the FESSAP Tennis Club, which runs the qualifying tournament for the Universiade, held once every two years.

“The preparation is much delayed already if we need to do again. We have to factor in for the Universiade qualifying tournament how to get student-athletes to prepare during training, funding, safety, and most of all, how the COVID-19 pandemic must be dealt with, such as vaccination, quarantine, and other means to protect our student-athletes going out of the country,” said Quiza.

He noted that the Universiade Qualifying Tournament, known as the 6th National Students Tennis Championship, is temporarily slated this year from October 27 to 31.
