Vietnam will be spending $330 million to host the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi.

The budget, which amounts to P16.696 billion in Philippine currency, has been readied by the Vietnam government since 2017.

Vietnamese officials discussed their readiness to host the Games in 2021 after they officially accepted the Southeast Asian Games Federation flag on Wednesday.

This was after the Philippines formally handed over the hosting of the 31st biennial meet for the year 2021 through executive secretary Salvador Medialdea.

“We have hosted the SEA Games, one that is most memorable. And now, we will come together again as one in 2021 in Vietnam,” said Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino during Wednesday’s closing ceremonies at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.

Vietnamese officials informed organizers from the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Comittee that they have earmarked $290 million of the total budget to upgrade their sports facilities.

The Philippine government earmarked around P6 billion in hosting the 30th SEA Games.

The events of the 2021 Games will be hosted in the capital city of Hanoi and adjacent localities.

House Speaker Allan Peter Cayetano and Tolentino, the SEA Games Federation president, passed the SEA Games flag to Vietnam Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Vietnam Olympic Committee president Prof Nguyen Danh Thai and Hanoi vice mayor Nguyen Van Suu.

After the turnover, Vietnam’s flag was raised to officially declare it as the next host.
