SCORING on late goals, the Philippine Malditas came away with a 2-1 triumph over host Jordan in their opening game in the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup at the Amman International Stadium in Amman, Jordan.

An own-goal from Jordanian Yasmeen Khair and Malditas booter Sarina Bolden’s efforts earned goals for the Filipinas who are playing on the Asian stage for the first time.

It was a memorable start for the Malditas after Khair equalized in the 51st minutes, and Bolden made her big move in the 76th minute.

The Malditas, who are the lowest ranked team in the eight-team field, share the Group B lead with China, which demolished Thailand, 4-0.

The world no. 70th Malditas struggled after Jordan took the lead in the 14th minute after Maysa Jabarah unleashed a half-volley into the left side of the goal.

Goalkeeper Kerra Bastes-Jones tried to fend it off, but it was out of her reach.

In the 51st minute, Jesse Shugg attempted a free kick. It ricocheted off the head of Khair for an own goal.

Then in the 76th minute Sarina Bolden got a chance to put the Malditas in front.

Getting a pass from Sarina Long, she outran Jordan keeper Salma Ghazal with a well-placed strike that silenced the crowd of 9,473 spectators that watched the game.

China will next meet the Philippines today, Monday.
