SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique—It was his elder sister’s birthday and Maurice Sacho Ilustre was very tired. It showed in the bluish rings under his eyes.  But he still  earned his fifth gold medal yesterday at the Binirayan Sports Complex here.

In what became a friendly race with teammate Andrei Pogiongko, the 17-year-old Ilustre still found the energy to finish ahead in 57.68 seconds to win the secondary boys 100-meter butterfly.

“Yes, that’s for her,” said Ilustre whose sister Sabrina celebrated her 22nd birthday. This put him closer to becoming the most bemedalled athlete of the 2017 Palarong Pambansa.

Ilustre, an 11th grader at La Salle Zobel, had already broken four records in his previous races this week. This was also close. It was 15/100ths of a second over the old record of 57.56 second that he set in 2015.

“Halfway na. Sobrang nakakapagod. As in, nararamdaman ko na since the first day. Pero dahil first place ako, worth it na rin yung pagod,” said Ilustre.
