THE Philippine ice hockey team that won the country’s first ever bronze medal in the recent 8th Asian Winter Games will likely win the gold in the coming Southeast Asian Games.

SEAG task force head Tom Carrasco believes so after the national squad claimed the division 2 honors last month in Sapporo, Japan.

Because of this, the squad can see action in the biennial meet with two other figure skaters.

“They won four games and lost only once. They have earned a slot to the SEA Games,” said Carrasco during yesterday’s weekly PSA Forum at the Golden Phoenix Hotel in Pasay City.

He was among the many leaders of national sports associations who guested with Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco, POC vice president Joey Romasanta, SEA Games chef de mission Cynthia Carreon, taekwondo’s Monsour del Rosario and karatedo’s Raymund Lee-Reyes.

Carrasco, who was the chef de mission to the Sapporo meet,  recalled that Team Pilipinas struck with five goals in the first period to lead the Philippines to 9-2 win over Macau in the finals.

It was the only medal won so far by Philippines in the week-long meet, which went on Feb. 19 to 26 in Sapporo and Obihiro, Japan.

The ice hockey team will join figure skater Michael Martinez and speed skater Kathryn Magno.

Martinez was ninth in the men’s singles division, while Magno placed 19th, 22nd, and 23rd in the 500-meter, 1000 and 1500-meter events.

Martinez and Magno were the best finishing Southeast Asian athletes in their disciplines.

This will be the first time that the three disciplines will be held in the biennial meet.

Carrasco said the task force will discuss their inclusion to the national delegation in today’s second round of talks with the national sports association on the list of athletes who can be sent to the SEA Games this August.

Meanwhile, the POC is getting ready to finalize talks with the provincial government of Zambales on it plans to send an initial batch of more than a hundred athletes to the Zambales Sports Complex.

The batch of athletes going to  Iba, Zambales next month are set to undergo specialized training for their coming stint in the SEA Games.

“At the moment, we are trying to complete a list of athletes that will undergo specialized training in the facilities in Zambales,” said Cojuangco.

These are members of the national team for pencak silat, muay thai and dragon boat.

The POC has plans to turn the  sports complex into national training center.

The Governor of Zambales, Amor Deles, offered the use of the facilities to the POC and the NSAs.
