Batangas eyed for PBA practices

While no green light has been given yet by the government for the restart of the 46th season of the Philippine Basketball Association, the search for venues which will host the bubble training of teams is in the works.

PBA officials are now looking at Batangas City, which  could find itself hosting the preparations of many teams now that lockdown status in the National Capital Region has gone down to the General Community Quarantine level.

Commissioner Willie Marcial said he will be heading for Batangas City this weekend with board member Alfrancis Chua to make this possible after the league received no assurance from the government that it will be able to open the season within the next two months.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and Senator Bong Go met with Marcial and Chua last Wednesday as the league forwarded its letter of appeal to the Interagency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Medialdea and Go, in an hourlong discussion with league officials, told Marcial that for the PBA to be able to restart its season, NCR will have to move out of its Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine status.

Marcial said the start of the coming season will happen once the cases of COVID-19 go down in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces.

“Kailangan bumaba ang mga cases. Kapag bumaba na ang cases, may appeal na kami sa IATFna mapayagan na,” said Marcial.

The PBA chief said the choice of Batangas City came up after Chua took the initiative to discuss the matter of allowing the Barangay Gin San Miguel Gin Kings train there.

Ilocos Norte and Antipolo are also among those being considered to be a bubble venue for training, according to Marcial.
