Philippine Basketball Association teams can soon start their training after the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases officially approved on Monday the joint administrative order (JAO) guidelines submitted by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Games and Amusements Board and the Department of Health.

But PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said they will begin the resumption of physical activities starting Monday after the swab testing of all the players, staff and coaches. He said they all need first to fill up the medical forms before the Makati Medical Center encodes it.

PBA players like JuneMar Fajardo and Terrence Romeo of San Miguel Beer and Scottie Thompson of Barangay Ginebra may start their conditioning regimen on Monday.

But training will be limited only to conditioning and without plays, contact or scrimmages.

“I am very thankful to the government for allowing us [to practice],” said Marcial.

The JAO guidelines and protocols for professional and non-professional sports were formulated to avoid the spread of the deadly pulmonary disease coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

The IATF last July 3 gave professional sports the green light to practice, but the PBA and other sports bodies decided to wait for the formally signed JAO guidelines before commencing the training and conditioning.

Aside from professional basketball and football,  boxing, mixed martial arts, muay thai, among others, can also resume their training sessions provided that the provisions of the JAO are met.

The JAO contains a penalty clause, fines and legal action that will be imposed against violators of its provisions.
