With 15 schools joining this season, the Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association celebrates its 50th season with a two-game bill when the basketball games commence on September 21 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Assumption College of Antipolo joins the league as it celebrates its golden anniversary and bears the theme: “Destined for Greatness.”

The league will have a unique setup this year, with all member schools sharing the responsibility of hosting the competitions this season.

The Centro Escolar University Lady Scorpions open their title retention bid with at 2 p.m. game against University of Makati.

The Lady Scorpions will be going for their ninth straight crown after turning back Philippine Women’s University, 70-37, in the finals last season.

Also taking part are Assumption College-San Lorenzo, Chiang Kai Shek College, La Salle-Zobel, La Salle College-Antipolo, Miriam College, St. Jude Catholic School, San Beda-Alabang, St. Paul-Pasig, St. Scholastica, St. Stephen’s High School, and the University of Asia and Pacific.

Angelicum College is on leave.

With the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex undergoing repairs and renovation for the 30th Southeast Asian Games, most of the games will be held in different schools, and on a home-and-away format.

“Today, we celebrate 50 years of the WNCAA and we expect another golden season as we continue our mission and vision of empowering women athletes in their field of excellence,” WNCAA executive director Vivian Manila said.

Manila discussed the coming season with other board members during a launch yesterday at the Aristocrat Restaurant in Manila.

Philippine Sports Commission board member Celia Kiram, who was a guest of honor with deputy executive director Guillermo Iroy, promised the facilities of the RMSC will be available next season once the makeover is finished.

The WNCAA was founded in 1970, with the desire to empower women with equal rights and opportunities in sports.
