Phoenix tries to near quarterfinals

After a two-week break and a triumphant return of the Philippines to the World Cup stage, action resumes in the Philippine Basketball Association as its 2019 Philippine Cup elimination round approaches its homestretch.

Second-running Phoenix Pulse (5-1) wants to take a step closer to a berth in the quarterfinals when it locks horns with skidding NorthPort (2-2) at 7 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum today.

Preceding that is a battle between teams in the lower echelon as Meralco (2-3) and Columbian (2-4) duke it out at 4:30 p.m.

Following its hot 5-0 start, the Fuel Masters saw their winning run snapped by now first-placer Rain or Shine, 94-98, last Feb. 10.

Phoenix is aching to get back to its winning ways to close in on a spot in the post-season.

“Now, we know the feeling of losing this season and it’s not good,” said Fuel Masters coach Louie Alas. “We want to win again right away to move closer to the quarterfinals.”

Alas’ squad will face a slumping Batang Pier side, who had lost its last two games after starting out with two wins out of the gates.

Also raring to get back on track are the Bolts and the Dyip as they figure in a critical tussle.

“This is a crucial game for both teams,” said Meralco coach Norman Black. “We understand that.

“We need to win. We need a brand new start at this point,” said Columbian coach Johnedel Cardel.

Right now, Meralco and Columbian are part of the bottom five teams and are both looking to make a run to be able to manage a top eight finish.
