Elasto Painters battle Phoenix

FOUR ailing teams hit the hardwood before the Holy Week as they are all in need of a victory in the continuing 2017 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup.

Middle-tier squads Rain or Shine (3-2) and Phoenix (2-3) face each other at 7 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in hopes of keeping in step with the teams in the upper bracket.

In the appetizer, the league’s two winless teams cross paths at 4:15 p.m. with one of them finally bound to list a victory.

After a sizzling 3-0 start to the tournament, the Elasto Painters have noticeably cooled down, losing three in a row to drop all the way to the middle of the pack.

Rain or Shine Elasto Painters guard Jeff Chan (center) drives past a pair of Phoenix Petroleum Fuel Masters in Matthew Wright (35) and Cyrus Baguio (3).

Their last assignment didn’t turn out well as they had several chances to win but eventually faltered in the last minute, losing to Alaska, 105-102, last week.

The good thing for Rain or Shine is that it is still in the thick of things thanks to the three wins it was able to rack up early.

As for the Fuel Masters, it has been a rollercoaster campaign thus far as they have alternated wins and losses in their five games.

They got easily pummeled by Philippine Cup champion San Miguel, 110-88, last Friday.

It hasn’t been a friendly conference for both the Road Warriors and the Batang Pier.

They are the only two teams who have yet to list a win.

With the homestretch of the eliminations fast approaching, both teams need to gather wins fast to salvage what’s left of their runs.

Fortunately for one of them, the drought will be over while on the other hand, the loser will remain at the bottom with its chances of making the top eight becoming even more bleak.
