Ernest John Obiena is worried about the condition of the three poles that he will use during the Tokyo Olympics.

The 25-year-old Obiena damaged two of them, while a replacement pole is on the way. His equipment needs extra care when it is brought to Japan.

Obiena talked about the condition of his gear, a week after he cleared 5.85 meters on his third attempt and set a new Philippine outdoor  record.

“We need to work on this so they (poles) will not get damaged on the flight to Tokyo. We are trying to make sure,” said Obiena on the weekly program, “Power and Play.”

Last June 12, Obiena won a gold medal in record-breaking fashion as he broke his two-year Philippine national outdoor record of 5.81 he set in Chiara, Italy, when he cleared 5.85 meters on his third attempt in the Jump and Fly competition in Mossingen, Germany.

There, Obiena used a second pole, a longer one which is one of the two that got cracked when he used them during indoor events last February.

“I hope it (new pole) arrives at the soonest time possible. We’re working on it,” added Obiena, who added that his new pole needs to be in good condition while in transit.

Obiena also owns the national indoor mark of 5.86 meters, which he established last February at the Orlen Indoor meet in Lodz, Poland.

At that time, Obiena said his two poles were already showing signs of cracking.

“Getting used to my two poles is easy. But now, it’s more on getting used to the new and bigger pole that I’m going to get into,” said Obiena.

Three weeks ago, Obiena had an encounter with Sweden’s Armand “Mondo” Duplantis of Sweden, who won the gold medal  at the FBK Games at the Blankers-Koen Stadion in Hengelo, the Netherlands.

Back then, Obiena cleared 5.80 meters on his first attempt to earn second place and the silver medal, with Duplantis topping the meet at 6.10 meters.
