Jones wins 2nd stage; Fedorov keeps lead

Kerteh, Malaysia—Two youngsters proved their worth in the 2nd stage of the 25th Petronas Le Tour de Langkawi on Saturday.

ARA Pro Racing Sunshine Coast’s Taj Jones ruled the second stage with an exhilarating photo finish, while Vino-Astana Motors’ Yevgeniy Fedorov remained the holder of three of four jerseys.

The 19-year-old Jones sprinted in the last two kilometers before nipping NTT Pro Cycling’s Maximilian Walscheid to take the win. 

“It’s pretty unbelievable that I won, I am very thankful for my team for the support,” said Jones, who recorded a time of four hours, five minutes and 29 seconds. 

Frenchman Jeremy Lecroq of B&B Hotels- Vital Concept ended third.

Five riders, spearheaded by Malaysian Nur Aiman Zariff of Team Sapura broke away from the peloton at the 20-km mark. 

Zariff took the three intermediate sprint stages and received the Resorts World Genting’s red jerseys.

Last year's stage winner Harrif Saleh of TSG was named best Malaysian rider.

First-stage winner Fedorov solidified his hold on the top individual general classification with a  time of 4:05:29 for a total of 5:56:14.

“It's very difficult (the stage), but I was still able to keep the jerseys,” said Federov through his interpreter.

The 19-year-old Kazakh managed reclaim the yellow, white and green jerseys after a strong showing.

The tour will continue its third leg from Temerloh going to Kuala Lumpur–a 162.5-km race.
