The Philippines will continue pursuing its bid to host the Asia/Oceania qualifying event for boxing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines president Ricky Vargas said this after a new date has been set by the organizers.

Competitions are now slated from March 3 to 11 by International Olympic Committee Boxing Task Force.

Wuhan was scheduled to host the Asia/Oceania qualifier from Feb. 3 to 14.

But it has been cancelled due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan.

“We are keenly considering hosting the event should the requirements be feasible,” said Vargas in his letter to the task force.

The qualifying events for boxing are now being managed by the IOC, which suspended the sport’s world governing body AIBA last June over a range of issues including governance, ethics, refereeing and judging, as well as finance.

The cancellation was announced on Wednesday after nine people were killed during the outbreak, believed to have began in Wuhan.

Because of this, the task force is now exploring the possibility of holding the qualifiers in other venues.

For now, the rest of qualifying events like the Africa qualifier in Dakar, Senegal from Feb 20 to 29 February, will go on, according to the IOC.

The cancellation came within hours after local officials requested visitors to avoid the city, while residents stayed put in their homes.
