Myk Saguiguit took over as coach of the University of Perpetual Help Altas yesterday.

Saguiguit, who coaches the junior squad and the Olivarez College Sea Lions for around 12 years, replaced Frankie Lim, who took a leave of absence in the ongoing 95th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament.

For now, the new Altas mentor was asked to come aboard temporarily, according to UPHSD athletic director Sammy Acaylar.

Lim, who steered San Beda to four NCAA titles, went on leave from the squad following the team’s slump in the start of the season.

“Coach Frankie Lim is on leave, as per the decision of the ex-com of University of Perpetual Help System DALTA,” said Acaylar.

The Altas has been struggling since opening and now have 2-5 win-loss slate.

And they took their worst loss last Friday when the Altas went down by 46 points to the defending champion San Beda Red Lions, 102-56.

Perpetual Help had an 11-7 slate last year before bowing to eventual champion San Beda in the Final Four.

Saguiguit also coaches the Olivarez College Sea Lions to numerous titles in the National Capital Region Athletic Association.

The Altas are set to meet the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals and are hoping to get back on their feet.

They missed the Final Four last season, with big man Bright Akhuetie no longer around.

Akhuetie has since transferred to the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.
