PH 3×3 team stuns Czechs

Team Philippines banked on the heroics of Angelica Surada in overtime to power the Philippines to another close win, this time a 15-14 victory over the Czech Republic.

The triumph allowed the Filipinas to reach the next stage of the women’s action in the 2019 FIBA 3×3 Under-18 World Cup Wednesday evening in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

As the game reached the sudden-death period, Surada, a product of Chiang Kai Shek College high school, scored on a free throw off a foul from Pavlína Tabačková.

Surada, who was held scoreless against the Netherlands, tallied only three points but her final point proved to be the key, handing the Philippines its third win in Pool C.

After scoring wins over Mongolia, the Netherlands, and Czech Republic, the Gilas women’s team moved on to the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday.

They will meet China in the knockout quarterfinals at 1:50 p.m.

China swept its four-game assignment in Pool A after fending off Mexico, 17-9, Ukraine, 21-9, and Sri Lanka, 21-5.

France also reached the quarterfinals with Mexico.

Camille Clarin, who was the hero in their match against the Netherlands, finished with nine points.

It was the Filipino-Canadian, who helped the Philippines erect a 13-8 lead with 2:35 left.

But Sára Kocourková allowed the Czechs rally back, cutting the lead to just two with 18.1 seconds remaining.

After getting a stop, Tabačková hit a buzzer-beating deuce to send the game into extra time, 13-all.

Earlier, it was Clarin’s buzzer-beater that allowed the Philippines to upset the Netherlands, 10-9.

Clarin followed up her own miss with a putback as time expired for the upset.

Clarin had three points.  

Meanwhile, two Philippine-based squads, world no. 24 Pasig Chooks-to-Go and upstart Balanga Chooks-to-Go will take part in the 2019 FIBA 3X3 Moscow Tinkoff Challenger.

The tournament that has two tickets at stake for the level 10 tournament Prague Masters and a total pot money of $32,000.

Joining these topflight tournaments are a must in order to keep the country’s hopes of joining an Olympic Qualifying Tournament in this budding sport.
