Eagles stun Tokai cagers, win inaugural World U meet

Dave Ildefonso shot 14 points for the Ateneo Blue Eagles as they repulsed Tokai University, 68-59, and completed a three-game sweep of the inaugural World University Basketball Series on Thursday at the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

The Blue Eagles first defeated Indonesia’s Universitas Pelita Harapan, 125-39, and then took down Chinese Taipei’s National Chengchi University, 88-78.

Forthsky Padrigao, Josh Lazaro, BJ Andrade, and Paul Garcia added eight apiece for the Blue Eagles, who broke free from a 43-41 lead and relied on a 17-4 spurt to pull away in the fourth period.

Hiroki Matsuzaki showed the way for the Japanese side with 16 points and five rebounds while Koyo Nishida chimed 13 points built on four treys.

The Blue Eagles are headed for Israel for another pre-season preparation activity.
