Philippine Sports Commission executive director and officer-in-charge Atty. Guillermo Iroy Jr. yesterday cited the Philippine Football Federation for hosting the 12th AFF Women’s Championship and staging all Group A matches of the Filipinas at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Atty. Guillermo Iroy Jr.

“We salute the PFF for organizing the 12th AFF Women’s Championship and for using the Rizal Memorial Stadium for this big international competition so that our local fans hungry for top quality football games can watch them there,” Iroy, an avid football enthusiast, said.

“This is another feather in the cap for PFF president Mariano Araneta Jr. and general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes,” he said.

“Holding this tournament at the Rizal Stadium adds another chapter to the rich legacy of this fabled football venue for the world’s most popular sport,” Iroy noted.

“We like to encourage our hometown fans to continue their support by packing the venue for the rest of the matches of the Filipinas, whom we hope will be inspired to make it all the way to the finals,” he added.

Meanwhile, defending champion Vietnam shoots for its second straight win against Laos today in Group B of the 12th Asean Football Federation Women’s Championship at the Binan Stadium in Laguna.

Fresh from their 3-0 shutout of Cambodia last Thursday, the Vietnamese face their cross-country rivals at 7 p.m. in a bid to share first place in the group with Myanmar, which returns to the pitch after the luxury of a three-day break as it takes on the Cambodians at 4 p.m.

The Burmese booters opened their campaign last Tuesday in trouncing the Timorese 7-0 in the 11-nation competition organized by the PFF.

Laos currently leads the group standings with four points following its 2-0 win over Timor Leste last Thursday, but this could dramatically change after today’s pair of matches in the event backed by the PSC, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., PLDT, Cignal and Molten.
