Filipinas in ‘amazing’ 1-0 defeat of Australia

Sarina Bolden found the back of the net in the 60th minute, sending the Philippines to another historic win — a 1-0 shocker over a youthful Australian side Monday night at the start of the 2022 ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship at the drizzle-drenched Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The 5’8” Bolden caught a throw-in toward the inside of the net and headed in the Filipinas’ lone goal, triggering a cheering frenzy from a sizeable hometown over the momentous achievement.

The World Cup-bound Philippines has never beaten Australia in the AFF Championships, but the win allowed the Filipinas to bounce back from a humiliating 0-7 setback the PH team suffered at the hands of the Aussies back in 2008.

“It’s an amazing result. The performance of the players has passed the team that has been ranked in the top 10 for the last 10 years,” said Filipinas’ coach Allen Stajcic.

Eva Madarang gave Bolden a chance to score with her throw-in from the right corner.

“The first half was cagey for both teams. But (I told the girls), we are playing against Australia and not the world,” said Stajcic.

Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel kept Australia from scoring in the remaining 30 minutes, deflecting and saving at least four final attempts.

Earlier, Singapore played Malaysia to scoreless draw in the other Group A encounter.

Over in Binan, Laguna, Alisa Rakpinit sank goals in the third and 88th minutes to lead Thailand to a 4-0 rout of Indonesia.
