Talented Filipino cagers will soon play in the Korean Basketball League.
The KBL, which used to exclusively hire Japanese players, approved of plans to expand their recruitment to include Filipino ballers, following a series of meetings over the last two days.
The 10-member KBL will do this after they are done drafting the Asian Player Quota system, which was finalized following a series of talks and consultations with their counterparts in the Philippine Basketball Association.
The criteria for recruiting players, according to reports coming from KBL officials, are limited to “Filipino citizens, and each member club is allowed to hire only one player.”
Club teams can hire a Filipino pro for a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years.
Details on the contracts that will be offered and the players salary is still under discussion.
The acquisition of Filipino players will soon commence for the coming 2022-2023 season.
Last February, the PBA and the Korean Basketball League made plans hold talks on cooperation, centering on plans for a player exchange from one association to another.
The talks were formalized after PBA commissioner Willie Marcial received a letter last February from KBL President Kim Hee-ok, who expressed the desire of the Koreans to expand their reach and build a partnership with the league.
The KBL is set to have a regular game schedule, starting on October 15, 2022 until March 29, 2023.
A new group of officials are now leading the KBL after Changwon LG CEO Joo-wan, Goyang Orion CEO Lee Seung-joon, and Anyang KGC CEO Huh Cheol-ho were voted following an election.
