Eagles on track

THE Ateneo Blue Eagles stayed on the winning track, while the La Salle Lady Green Spikers bounced back from a loss Sunday in the 77th University Athletic Association of the Philippines volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Mark Espejo came up with 12 hits as the Blue Eagles overpowered the Adamson Falcons, 26-24, 25-22, 25-18, and remained unbeaten in the men’s division.

The Lady Green Spikers, led by Christine Soyud, took four sets to get past University of the Philippines, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23, 25-10, in the women’s side. Soyud struck with 16 hits for the Lady Green Apikers, who improved to 8-1, behind the unbeaten Ateneo Lady Eagles (7-0).

Ateneo ended the Falcons’ seven-game winning run with its fifth win in a row to improve to a 6-2 slate.

With their latest win, the Blue Eagles stayed tied from first to fourth positions with the University of Santo Tomas Tigers, National University and the Falcons.

Joshua Villanueva had 11 hits, including half of Ateneo’s eight points off his blocks.

Ishmael Rivera scattered  10 points for the Loyola-based spikers, who scattered 40 kills overall.

   Meanwhile, Mark Gil Alfafara had 18 hits for the UST Tigers, who won over National University, 25-19, 28-26, 25-23, in their 79-minute contest.
