“Happy birthday, Jesus” might be the first Original Pilipino Music Christmas song for kids, performed by kids, co-written with a mother who sadly passed away on Christmas Day, 14 years ago (2006).

It’s comebacking songwriter was once a co-lyricist of Jose Mari Chan (of the now classic “Christmas in Our Hearts”)—Rina Caniza.

Rina is a lyricist, a two-time Awit Award winner (1st for co-writing the lyrics of the song “Christmas In Our Hearts,” 2nd for co-writing the lyrics of “Everlasting Love,” which is known as the first hit of The Company).

Several songs of hers have also been recorded by Joey Albert, Martin Nievera, Verni Varga, Manilyn Reynes, Gino Padilla, Donna Cruz, Joanne Lorenzana, and Paola Luz, to name a few. She also co-wrote the song “ Only A Mem’ry,” which once became a most requested song on the radio. It was sung by Joey Albert.

Rina’s new song, “Happy Birthday, Jesus,” was co-written with her mother, Trina Caniza, and friend, Jen Bautista.  Music is by her mom, lyrics are by Rina, and additional music by Jen.

Star Music handles the digital distribution and release of the song including the launch of the lyric video on various platforms.

“I produced the song. My good friend, Moy Ortiz line produced and vocally arranged it. When I first showed the song to Moy, he said, ‘Rina, this is a song for kids. Kids should sing it.’ And he is right. I also got excited when during the recording, Moy told me that it could be the first OPM Christmas song for kids,” Rina shares.

The songwriter adds that the song is interpreted by young talents aged between 8 and 13.

“My mom who wrote the music passed away on Dec. 25, 2006. She and I wrote this song in 2004 and in 2012, my friend, Jen Bautista added some music to the song, and actually, just last month, I wrote the lyrics of the second verse of the song,” Rina says.

“Over the years, I recorded some versions of the song, but I didn’t have the time to really promote it. I believe that now, with this 2020 recording, this is the definitive recording of the song and Atty. Marivic Benedicto of Star Music liked it right away,” she ends.
