Filipino American hip-hop artist Guapdad 4000, whose 2019 album was named by The New York Times as one of the best records of that year, has just released 1176, a very personal project that he considers as his outlet to tell his own story.

The album, which was a product of his creative collaboration with fellow Fil-Am artist !llmind, showcases his quick wit that gives way to poignant reflections on his life, and his community's story at large.

Filipino-American hip-hop sensation Guapdad 4000 released his new album, ‘1176’ for the emerging new label.

“Everything about this album is so honest, so pure, it’s very nostalgic but at the same time it’s super modern in the sound. It has some of the best music that I've ever made,” the Fil-Am artist told Manila Standard Entertainment in a virtual interview.

“We decided to pair up with Paradise Rising for this project because they brought up the 88Rising initiative. This album is very personal because it talks about my roots. The album cover features me and my lola standing infant of the house I grew up in. And there’s a Filipino element to this that I speak on and I want to broadcast and tell about my experience growing up being black and being Filipino,” Guapdad carried on.

The album came out last month via Paradise Rising, 88rising's sub-label with Globe, making Guap and !llmind the first artists to release a full-length project through the young label that is dedicated to uplifting artists of Filipino descent.

Speaking about his collaboration with !llmind on their album, 1176, Guapdad said, “If !llmind had a power it would be to shapeshift, he can do anything! Something like this comes in handy when you need to tell the full spectrum of your story like I did in this music. I had no idea we would stumble upon something this magical though but I guess I should have known that linking up with my Filipino brother would enhance my superpowers! Enjoy it scamily.”

Growing up in West Oakland provided the Grammy Nominated, Platinum recording artist (born Akeem Hayes) is known for his profound sense of humor, paired with his aptitude for commanding attention, translated organically into his lighthearted freestyles and ignited his interest in developing his well-rounded capacities as a vocalist.
