How vlogging boosted Alex Gonzaga’s career as TV star

There are a few emerging local artists on YouTube, but none of them has come close, at least none as of yet, to how Alex Gonzaga dominates the popular video streaming site. Thus, it is safe to say that the 31-year-old screen star is the queen of YouTube in the Philippines.

Social Blade, a website that tracks social media statistics and analytics, ranks Alex Gonzaga Official, her YouTube channel, in no. 10, or trailing behind the YouTube channels of the country’s top TV networks, ASB-CBN and GMA. The website also estimates her yearly earnings between $92,000 and $1.5 million (multiply that to current USD to PHP exchange rate).

Established YouTubers could easily give a rough estimate of how much Alex actually earns, but asked if she’s earning more in vlogging than being a television star, Alex gave a vague answer, which we can easily understand why.

With more than 5 million subscribers, Alex Gonzaga is considered as the local queen of the popular video streaming site, YouTube.

“People started watching me on YouTube because they already knew that I’m an actress. I think, if it wasn’t for my job on TV, people wouldn’t notice me,” she said in an interview during the launch of her Secosana bags collection.

Kahit papaano, nag-aartista na ko, so kilala na nila ako . And my sister had fans who wanted to see my channel because she’s in my first video. When I started vlogging, a lot of doors opened for me bilang artista,” she continued.

During the pocket interview, a scribe commented that she’s already the highest paid YouTuber in the country, which she corrected immediately.

“No, I’m not. It’s Sir Raffy (Tulfo),” she said in jest.

True enough, opportunities started to come in when she’s become a prominent personality on the Web. For instance, she now has a makeup (Issy & Co. Cosmetics) and (Secosana) bag collections.

Alex endorses Issy & Co. Cosmetics, which sells vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free beauty products.

“This collection is who I am and what kind of handbag I truly love to carry—small enough to be handled with ease, fitting my most important personal items—very functional; and yet exude freshness and a sense of style that one can match with whatever they are wearing,” Alex said of her Secosana bag collection.

“It is truly an expression of my passion for fashion,” she added.

For the executives of the brand, they wanted Secosana to be relatable and to be appealing to more than just the millennial market.

“We wanted the brand and the collection to be true to who Alex is, designs that she appreciates and will use, so as to appeal to Generation Z,” a representative from Secosana said.

Meanwhile, for her makeup collection, Alex is proud that she’s promoting a local brand that promises to offer high-quality yet affordable cosmetics.

Alex shows off an item from her collection from local bag brand, Secosana.

“The items are made in Taiwan and are vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, and paraben-free,” she winked as she presented the products with some members of the press and blogging community.

The brand currently offers a selection of lip products in different formulas: Multiuse Crayon, Cream Tint, Liquid Lipstick, Lipstick Pen, and Cushion Lippy. They have something for everyone. Each variant also has six shades to choose from.
