Celine Dion moved to tears after Pinoys show her ‘Power of Love’

It was Celine Dion’s final number. She emerged from the backstage wearing a two-tone chiffon gown of white and pink. She looked every inch of a concert goddess especially when she waved her gown’s full length drape while the  intro flute for “My Heart Will Go On” was playing somewhere on the stage.

Then she started singing. I closed my eyes. I saw Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as Jack and Rose in the iconic scene, which is now synonymous to the song. She sang it so well and so emotional that I had to convince myself that I wasn’t listening to a pre-recorded music. But no, she was singing it live. In fact, she sang every song live during the 90-minute show, which concluded with the outro “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” an a capella tribute to Elvis Presley’s anthemic hit –another one for the books performance on her second night in Manila.

Speechless for more than two minutes, amid the roaring crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena, she responded, “Thank you so much. Sometimes it’s so hard to travel when you are a mother with three children. It’s so hard for some people to organize a vacation or a trip because it involves so many things. It’s something very hard to organize. Similarly, it’s so hard to travel around the world…we experience jetlag, and time differences.”

POWERHOUSE VOCALS. Celine Dion showcased her perfect pitching as she deftly belted out the lyrics.

“But I’m not here to tell you that’s it’s hard and complain. It’s exactly what I want because I do want to travel and to sing to many people as possible. The show is already over actually. You are not making it easy for me to go,” she said while almost in tears.

It was definitely a failed attempt to say goodbye and the crowd didn’t let the moment pass and chanted in unison, “We love you, we love you.”

“I love you, too,” Celine replied, “I want to tell you thank you once again. You and I, although it’s the first time we meet, we have something in common. We have love and I’m pretty sure that you dream about a world without any barriers that we could see each other whether you come to me or we come to you. Let me tell you how much I love you in my own way.”

Celine Dion is back on the road, dazzling her way across Asia with incredible live performances and timeless hits.

Along her greatest hits, she also sang other songs from films including 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'My Heart Will Go On,' and 'Ashes.'

The Canadian chanteuse is bringing her A-game with hot tracks and even hotter style choices by hitting up some countries for the first time ever, like Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The 50-year-old was first scheduled to visit Manila back in November 2014 but she had to cancel her entire Asian tour including her shows in Vegas due to her husband’s condition. Her husband, Rene Angelil, died in January 2016. This episode had a special number during her concert when she performed “Recovering,” a song written for her by Pink.

This year, when it was announced that her concert was pushing through, the tickets were sold out on the first day prompting concert presenters including Smart and PLDT to open a second night to satisfy the great demand.

Prior to her Manila concert, Celine took to Instagram to share a not-so-serious photo with caption: “I Drove All Night, To Get To You’……my new wheels…low maintenance, really good on gas! (security optional ). Now let’s get this little buggy on the road again…next stop, Manila!”

Indeed, Celine prepared an entertaining show that was never short of some comic relief in between numbers.

Presented by Smart and PLDT, the setlist in 'Celine Dion Live' concert was a solid mix of classic hits, various covers, and medleys.

She opened the Manila show with a bang — welcoming thousands of fans at the Mall of Asia Arena in her effulgent sequined tuxedo when she belted “Power of Love,” a Jennifer Rush original that became Celine’s no. 1 hit in 1994.

She sang her greatest hits in succession. With just a few spiels in between she performed “That’s the Way It Is,” “I’m Alive,” and “Because You Loved Me.”

Returning onstage after a brief break and costume change (she had six), she sang “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” immediately followed by “Beauty and the Beast.”

At the lobby of the MOA Arena, concertgoers were given the chance to take snaps aboard this Smart Music Live installation, which is a reminiscent of 'Titanic.'

“This is the first movie theme song I sang,” referring to the last song she performed with one of her backup singers. She then proceeded in telling a story of how she received an invitation letter from fellow Canadian Ryan Reynolds. She said she thought it was to ask her to play a part in a film. But she’s honored that the invitation was for her to sing the song “Ashes,” the original soundtrack for the movie, Deadpool 2.

The celebrated chanteuse also honored Tom Jones and the late Prince in her concert. She had an upbeat number for “Kiss” and emotion-filled production of “Purple Rain.”

Throughout the show, Celine kept the energy high with some monologues punctuated by her animated face. She had no other surprises apart from the massive video wall, which themes kept changing to match the song she was singing. They were not too distracting that made the people at the Arena focus on Celine’s voice that was never anything other than note-perfect.

It’s true that Celine Dion’s career reached its commercial peak 20 years ago. It’s also true that the audiences that attended her concert were mostly old millennials and those who enjoyed her CDs back in the late ‘90s.  And that’s the whole point, for sure that’s what most younger audiences wouldn’t understand – the beauty of music without auto-tune.
