To create three videos for one song may be self-indulgence overboard. But with a pop, funky track promoting self-confidence and empowerment in women, or in the description of Jensen Gomez who wrote and produced it, in “those identifying themselves as queens,” the emphasis should be on the level of significance its creator awards the song.
It’s the more appropriate take for “Yas Queen,” the lead single to Jensen’s Phases Vol. 2 released early last month.
Each of the three has its own character and strength. Often a digital single worth promoting needs two videos to upload – the official one and the lyric showcase. The latter is expected to have only the words to the song with a simple, almost unadorned backdrop. But in “Yas Queen,” the singing lady Dani Idea already appears. It would have been alright to label the clip as an official video. Yet, a more stylish output, with several outfit changes, was shot and put on YouTube a month after the three-song EP’s release.
Then sandwiched between these videos is the dance clip, the one that may be classified as a fan-made material yet delivers the most striking message. It features top Filipina ballerina Denise Parungao-Philips alone dancing to her form of expression on a rooftop, in many ways and sways shouting to the world that she’s a queen and not afraid to show it.
The most viewed among the three at the time of this writing, it’s a dance video of “strong jumps and enjoyable moves” which declares that it is pushing “for self-love, empowerment, and confidence” and “dedicated to all the queens out there,” adding the battle cry, ”Keep moving to your own beat and groove.”
The track actually grooves really well with its easy-catchy bass line, while the melody runs and the singing sounds like it’s from a black singer. That’s a compliment, likewise mirroring its international appeal. Some of us know when a song, even if sung in English, is OPM. This one blurred that line in a party atmosphere.
“Yas Queen,” a phrase strongly attributed to the community of gays, bisexuals, transgenders, and queers, is also arguably the strongest cut from “Phases Vol. 2” and its preceding Volume 1 released last July. Both EPs and the three music videos are content from rising label Off The Record. During a virtual press conference orchestrated by Amplified Entertainment, Jensen shared that he wrote it for the ladies at home while growing up becoming a man himself. The two other songs in Phases Vol.2 are “Sprung” featuring Seonna, and “From My Window,” with Switch of Assembly Generals.
A 2017 song he performed with Reese Lansangan, “Maybe,” already garnered five million and a half streams on Spotify. “No Sides” from Phases Vol. 1 has likewise shown strong reception from streamers.
“I just want to be successful enough to create more,” Jensen humbly noted.
It’s not a surprise if countless yas queens support his personal cause.
