Why U2 should matter

The late George Harrison’s infamous criticism of U2, wherein he labeled the band’s work as “rubbish” and “egocentric,” sure sounded unsettling for fans.

No doubt The Quiet One earned respect as ex-Beatle who was ultimately behind “Here Comes The Sun” (by far the most streamed Beatles song) and “Something” (second most covered Beatles song). Both are key tracks from the Abbey Road album which just returned to the top of the UK charts.

Still, not even a Beatle could deny that U2 is revered by fans the world over. It is the group with the most Grammy Awards and one of the best-selling artists with estimated 170 million records sold worldwide.

Here in the Philippines, the high anticipation for their upcoming Dec. 11 show at the Philippine Arena reached fever pitch right on the day it was confirmed to happen.

Why U2 should matter
U2. Formed in 1976, the Irish rock band from Dublin is fronted by Bono with members The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr.. The band is set to stage its first Manila concert in December at the Philippine Arena.

The Joshua Tree Tour Manila leg marks the first time BonoThe EdgeAdam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. will perform in the country. As stated in a press release, the concert of the Irish quartet is “expected to bring together music fans across generation.”

I wish to share my two cents’ worth as to why U2 generates fan excitement felt not since Michael Jackson did it in the late 90s. First, here’s a band that has certified hits from the new wave ‘80s and which remodeled themselves into a rock band with much credence. It kept them relevant as most bands from their breakthrough period categorically became has-beens.

Reputation-wise, the band grew embracing activism and putting to good-use their celebrity for worthy causes. The charismatic Bono himself has received awards for his efforts, highlighted by being named Person of the Year in 2005 (along with couple Bill and Melinda Gates) and a honorary British Knighthood two years later. It had been reported that all proceeds from the Sweetest Thing single went to the Chernobyl Children’s Project.

Such development is as vital as the effort to progress their music anchored on anthemic quality “built on Bono’s expressive vocals and The Edge’s effects-based guitar textures.” It’s in sync with corporate sponsor Smart using for the show the hashtag #LiveYourAnthem.

As a live ensemble, U2 is a class all its own, with the 360 Degree Tour concluding (in July 2011) as the highest-grossing concert tour and having sold the most tickets for a tour. Even a Bono spiel could end up iconic after he once told a crowd, prior to performing a cover of Helter Skelter, that they were “stealing back” what Charles Manson “stole from The Beatles.” We all know the backstory once upon a time in Hollywood.

But one thing making them really admirable is the fact they have remained active and intact for the last 43 years! Obviously, Filipinos can’t get enough rallying behind a lovable family staying together.
