OPM: Alive and digital

OPM: Alive and digitalWe once heard or read people declaring OPM (Original Pilipino Music) is dead. Well, those who believe it isn’t have obviously gone digital.

The current period may have led to the near-complete demise of CD releases and to an extent, radio airplay as it was known to be. But that opened the floodgates for new OPM tracks, as most artists with proper recordings and considerable fan bases get out without the need for traditional record label support. In fact, some labels now look at hit digital releases and YouTube sensations in assessing who to sign up.

OPM: Alive and digital
OPM's Ogie Alcasid stages a show with It's Showtime's 'Hurados' on Oct. 10 at Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila.

OPM authority Ogie Alcasid recalled dealing with the dilemma of how to push OPM back to strong contention at the start of this closing decade.

“OPM had the reputation of being for older people. A lot of indies then didn’t want to call their work OPM,” informed Ogie at the presscon for his next week’s show to be held at Resorts World Manila’s Newport Performing Arts Theater.

He quickly made note of the turnaround. “But in the advent of technology, music became readily available and younger people found new music created by people their age.”

He added, “I’m happy for them that they have that connection and I could not imagine it would happen.”

Ogie name-dropped acts like Ben & Ben, Moira Dela Torre, and December Avenue as belonging to that pool of new OPM torch-bearers.

On Oct. 10 though, Ogie and the Hurados will likely turn back time to perform classic OPM with a judges-roster coming from ABS-CBN It’s Showtime’s talent-search “Tawag Ng Tanghalan.” The superb lineup includes Rey Valera, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Randy Santiago, among others. The one-night show boasts Nikko Rivera as musical director and Paolo Bustamante as concert director.

Speaking of classic, digital financial services leader PayMaya-the financial technology arm of lead tech company Voyager Innovations-unveiled its new jingle last Thursday to the tune of Eraserheads’ “Ligaya.” Its lyrics promoting the best perks of going cashless, the new brand campaign song “encourages all Filipinos to get more joy and value out of daily transactions by opting to use PayMaya instead of cash for all their payment needs.”

It couldn’t be more catchy, with Ligaya being the track that introduced the iconic band to mainstream listeners.

Paolo Azzola, chief operating officer and managing director of PayMaya, related, “Our formula is simple. Make digital payments accessible, more convenient, secure, rewarding, and more fun with newer app experience and the biggest discounts and cashback promos plus an ever-growing network of merchant and add money partners.”

Paymaya’s Don’t Pay Cash. PayMaya! campaign is said to accelerate digital payments adoption in the country in support of the National Financial Inclusion goals and the under-NRPS (National Retail Payment System) aim to increase digital transactions to 20 percent by 2020.

Sounds like good music in digital format.
