New Year, new shows

IT’S time for television networks to roll out their showcases for the first quarter of the year. That’s a practice in local broadcasting, as the Philippines is in the tropics and doesn’t experience the four seasons in the Western hemisphere upon which TV networks hook their programming. And so, their programming matrices are on a quarterly basis, and the first quarter of the year seems to be the ideal to launch new shows, especially for the primetime block.

The Kapuso network is particularly very strong on this. And so, in the first week of current year, its followers will start watching a new show.

First on the matrix is a light romance drama populated by a cast of young and old actors, yet focused on the love of two teenagers.

It’s a nice way to ring in the New Year for GMA Network, introducing a love team that has been hatched after experimenting with a couple of shows, including the highly successful Niño last year.

Once Upon a Kiss premieres tonight, right after the network’s nightly extended newscast, 24 Oras.

The series focuses on the relationship of a rich and spoiled young man and a young girl on the poorer side of rural society. They were childhood friends, though, but as the boy grew up his values in life changes as well. The poor girl is left behind in the bucolic neighborhood with her parents.

But when as the young man meets with an accident and has been in a coma for months, only the kiss of his childhood friend awakens him. That’s how their love story begins and this despite the tiff between their families.

Miguel Tanfelix and Bianca Umali play the young lovers. He is Prince Pelaez and she is Ella Rodrigo.

The two have onscreen chemistry that the Kapuso network decided to gamble on them for a show on primetime, after all their first primetime team up in Niño sealed them as a potential love team. Add to that their appearance together in the Sunday sitcom Ismol Family.

Also in the cast are Michael De Mesa as Enrique “King” Pelaez, Cris Villanueva as Eric Almario, and Tessie Tomas as Merida Almario,.

Mylene Dizon is back on the Kapuso network and plays Giselle Pelaez Almario, Prince’s mother.

The Rodrigo Family (Ella’s family) is made up of Manilyn Reynes (Aurora Rodrigo), Ella’s mother; Keempee de Leon (Jimmy Rodrigo, Aurora’s husband), and Nova Villa as Adela Rodrigo, Ella’s grandmother.

Aurora (Manilyn) and Eric (Cris) want a happy life together. But Eric gives up his love for Aurora and pursues Giselle (Mylene), the daughter of the family who owns the rest house Aurora’s parents work for. It is upon the instigation of Merida, Eric’s mother, who is as ambitious as any deprived woman.

Aurora marries Jimmy (Keempee), Eric’s friend. Eric, meanwhile, regrets marrying Giselle whose family treats him like a puppet on a string.

What happens to these two ill-fated lovers and their children is what Kapuso followers will have to watch out for, Monday to Friday after the newscast.
